An Evening Worth Remembering

November in Singapore does not smell of autumn. But on the evening of the 15th, Art Restaurant's dining room carried something unmistakable — the garlic-honey-earth perfume of freshly shaved Alba white truffle drifting from plate to plate across 32 set tables. It was the kind of smell that stops conversation.

The 2022 Alba White Truffle Benefit Dinner was the third edition of what has become one of Singapore's most quietly significant annual charity dinners. Organised by Art Restaurant and connected live to the World Alba White Truffle Charity Auction at Castello di Grinzane Cavour in Piedmont, Italy, the evening raised funds for Foodsteps by World Food Future — a free nutrition education programme for underprivileged children in Singapore aged 7 to 12. Every dollar from ticket sales and auction bids went directly to the cause. Art Restaurant absorbed all operational costs.

Michelin Guide Singapore covered the event in its October 2022 feature, citing it as an example of fine dining used with purpose. For Chef-Owner Daniele Sperindio — who grew up in Genova and trained at Alinea and Narisawa before building Art into a one-star kitchen — the annual truffle dinner is both a professional milestone and a personal one. "These truffles come from people I know in the Langhe. Cooking them for charity feels right."

The Five-Course Menu

Chef Daniele built the 2022 menu around a single constraint: each course had to justify the truffle without hiding behind it. The result was a progression that moved from delicate to rich, with the white truffle's aroma intensifying as the evening went on — peaking at the signature pasta course before settling into the quiet finish of the dessert.

The World Alba White Truffle Charity Auction

The centrepiece of the evening was not on any plate. From 8:30 PM, Art Restaurant's dining room was connected via live stream to the Castello di Grinzane Cavour in Alba, where the annual World Alba White Truffle Charity Auction was underway. The castle — a UNESCO-listed medieval fortress in the Langhe hills — has hosted the auction since 1999. Bidders from Singapore, Italy, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Moscow participated in real time.

How the Auction Worked

Select specimens of the season's finest white truffles were offered in the main auction at Castello di Grinzane Cavour. Participating restaurants worldwide, including Art Restaurant, joined via live connection to submit bids on behalf of their guests. Winning bidders received their truffle that evening — either to take home or to return for a private, customised truffle menu with Chef Daniele at a later date. Art Restaurant coordinated all logistics for Singapore-based winners.

One hundred percent of auction proceeds were donated directly to the Auction's designated charity beneficiary for 2022.

The 2020 auction — which Art Restaurant participated in remotely during the pandemic — raised €482,000 globally. The 2022 edition resumed in person at the castle for the first time since 2019, and Singapore's table was among the most active in the room.

Foodsteps — Where the Money Went

Foodsteps by World Food Future

All proceeds from the 2022 dinner — ticket sales and auction bids combined — were transferred in full to Foodsteps by World Food Future, a Singapore-based charity running a free nutrition education programme for children aged 7 to 12 from low-income households.

The programme teaches practical food knowledge: how to read nutritional labels, understand food waste, make affordable meals, and relate to food as something grown rather than packaged. Delivered through schools and community centres, it targets children at the age when food habits form and are hardest to change later. Art Restaurant has supported Foodsteps since the inaugural dinner edition in 2020.

The S$45,000 raised in 2022 funded the equivalent of approximately 85 full-year programme places for children who would not otherwise have had access.

The Evening's Detail

The Truffle

320 grams of Grade A Alba white truffle (Tuber magnatum pico), sourced directly from the Langhe and arriving in Singapore within 48 hours of harvest. Stored at 16°C, shaved tableside. Approximately 10 grams per guest across all courses.

The Setting

Art Restaurant, Level 6 of National Gallery Singapore. The rooftop dining room looks out across the Padang and Marina Bay. On a clear November evening, the view competes with the food. Both held their own.

The Format

32 guests. Five courses. Four wines. One live auction. The evening ran from 7:00 PM until past 10:30 PM — longer than planned, because nobody wanted it to end.

The Reception

Ninety-eight percent of guests rated the experience "exceptional" or "outstanding." Covered by Michelin Guide Singapore, Tatler Asia, Robb Report Singapore, CNA Lifestyle, and TimeOut Singapore.

From a 2022 guest, returning in 2023, 2024, and 2025:

"The pasta is the reason. It sounds simple — tagliolini, butter, Parmigiano, truffle — but there is nothing simple about it. The truffle arrives at the table still warm from the shaver and the smell changes the room. We booked for 2026 within a week of leaving."

Media Coverage

The 2022 dinner received coverage across Singapore's leading food and lifestyle publications. The Michelin Guide Singapore featured the event in its October 2022 newsletter under "New in Food," noting Art Restaurant's commitment to pairing culinary excellence with measurable social impact. Tatler Asia covered the charitable dimension; Robb Report focused on the wine selection and auction results; CNA Lifestyle and TimeOut Singapore reported on the event's growing reputation as a fixture in Singapore's annual charity calendar.

The Annual Tradition Continues

The 2022 dinner was the third edition of what Chef Daniele has described as a permanent fixture in Art Restaurant's calendar. The format is deliberately unchanged year to year: intimate seating, seasonal truffle at its peak, the same sourcing families in the Langhe, and 100% of proceeds to the beneficiary charity. What changes is the cause, the vintage, and the room — 32 guests in 2022 became 40 in 2026, with the addition of the largest single sponsor in the event's history.

For the 2026 Alba White Truffle Benefit Dinner & Auction, Art Restaurant is partnering with KINGKONGTOTO as title sponsor, raising the charity target to over S$200,000 for the ilLido Foundation. The dinner takes place on Saturday, 15 November 2026. Forty seats only.

The 2026 edition marks the largest charity target in the event's history. KINGKONGTOTO's sponsorship brings the dinner's reach beyond the dining room — proceeds go to the ilLido Foundation, which funds food education and culinary training for underprivileged youth in Singapore. Seats sold out ahead of the 2025 edition within three weeks of opening; the 2026 dinner is expected to follow the same pattern. Guests returning from previous years account for over half the confirmed bookings. Full details of the menu, auction format, and ticket availability are on the 2026 dinner page.
